We are now accepting applications for the 2012 programme of Higher Education Field Academies. Run by the University of Cambridge, HEFA gives academically able, gifted & talented pupils aged 14-17 years old the chance to develop new learning skills and raise their educational confidence and aspirations in order to support them in applying to the best possible university for them.
HEFAs are three-day non-residential courses providing very bright young people with the opportunity to work in small, mixed-school teams to complete a practical investigation guided by experts involving collecting, analysing and writing up their own unique new data gained during a 2-day archaeological excavation making new discoveries which contributes to current research at the University of Cambridge. The third day is spent in the University of Cambridge analysing the results in discussive learning sessions intended to stretch and challenge learners and support their preparation of a written analysis for assessment. Throughout the HEFA programme participants gain an inspirational and positive experience of life and learning at the highest level, complimented on day three by a workshop about applying to the University of Cambridge led by people routinely involved in the selection process.
The HEFA programme is endorsed by the University of Cambridge and the OCR exam board in recognition of the level of cross-curricular challenge it offers young people to achieve in three distinct areas (1) practical fieldwork, (2) personal, learning and thinking skills and (3) data analysis and report writing. HEFA is unique in the opportunity it offers students to achieve in such a wide range of activities at the same time, at the same time as inspiring them to aim high academically, and it has long been highly valued as such by participating students, staff and schools. For feedback on previous HEFAs as well as the scheduled dates and locations for 2012, please see our website.
HEFA is suitable for participants in school years 9-12 interested in studying ANY SUBJECT at University (including those still undecided) who have achieved/are considered capable of achieving at least 8+ GCSEs at grades A*-B.
