Raiding the Vikings

A mass burial containing 54 beheaded skeletons was  found on Ridgeway Hill in Dorset in 2009. Dr Britt Baillie-Warren, research associate at the University of Cambridge’s Division of Archaeology, has analysed the bodies and dated them to the eleventh century and originating from Scandinavia. In a new television documentary, she puts forward the theory that the men were Viking mercenaries slaughtered at the time of the St Brice’s Day massacre.

Britt has been involved in Access Cambridge Archaeology’s outreach work for several years, following her research interest in heritage management and engagement, and designed the ACA website.

Viking Apocalypse airs on National Geographic Channel at 9pm tonight, 25th January. You can also read more about the discovery on the University of Cambridge’s news webpage here.
