Day 1 – Clare Castle

A sunny start to the morning, later followed by showers, torrential downpour, hail, more sun and showers. The ACA flags look suitably regal in front of the motte welcoming visitors to the site.

The registration desk is ready to meet and greet visitors and volunteers.

A sherd of Thetford ware from Trench D. Sherds of prehistoric, Saxon and medieval pottery were also found in Trench D. Trenches A and B have begun by removing topsoil with lots of Victorian metalwork from the railway.

Jess’ loyal trench dogs wait patiently for finds.

One of the gazebos erected to ward off the rainclouds. A little wonky!

Our star find today from Trench D – a medieval floor tile from a high status building.
