Our last day on site but there was still plenty of work to finish: completing the excavation of a few features, and cleaning sections in the side of the trench for drawing and photography. Site supervisors Cat and Jess showed students how to measure and draw the sections through the ditch, which will help us understand the sequence of events from cutting the ditches to their back-filling and eventual burial. Here a section through the Trench 1 ditch is being recorded.
Mid-morning we welcomed the Mayor of Saffron Walden Councillor Keith Eden, seen here with Dr Carenza Lewis, site supervisor Cat Ranson (seated with drawing board) and some of the diggers. The Mayor and Saffron Walden Town Council have been very supportive of the project from the outset, giving us permission to dig on the Common, so we were pleased to show the Mayor the outcome of the week’s excavation!
