Applications for Goldingham Hall Excavations in October Open

DSCF6293

As part of the Heritage Lottery Funded Managing a Masterpiece scheme and with thanks to Ashley Cooper, local historian and landowner, Access Cambridge Archaeology (ACA) will be returning to Goldingham Hall at the start of October 2013 to run an eight day programme of community archaeological excavations. Funded by Managing a Masterpiece, ACA ran a fieldwalking event for members of the public at the site, close to the village of Bulmer in Essex and overlooking the Stour Valley, in November 2012, which you can read about here.

The flint scatter showed that the land north-west of the present day hall was used throughout the prehistoric period, with some concentrations likely to indicate more intensive use as settlement in some areas indicated by clustering of worked flint with fire-cracked flint. ACA will excavate in this area in October 2013 to in order to establish the nature and extent of prehistoric activity. Concentrations of high medieval pottery along with oyster shell immediately west of Goldingham Hall also hinted at settlement nearby at this period. Taking into account the documentary evidence attesting to Goldingham as a manorial site and the anecdotal evidence of the landowner about a suspected medieval rubbish pit in this area, ACA also intend to investigate this area further. Please see our the Bulmer fieldwalking page here to read the full report.

The excavations will take place between Wednesday 2nd and Wednesday 9th October 2013 (inclusive), and will be directed by Carenza Lewis, well known from Channel 4’s Time Team and BBC’s Story of England.

For further information and to download an application form please visit the ACA website – http://www.arch.cam.ac.uk/aca/goldinghamhall.html

People of all ages, with or without previous experience, are welcome to apply to take part – an enthusiasm for finding out more about the past is the only requirement! We will endeavour to involve as many applicants as possible but priority will be given to residents of Gestingthorpe and Bulmer, members of Gestingthorpe History Group and Bulmer History Group and students (and their parents) registered at Bulmer St Andrew’s Primary School.

The deadline for applications is 12 noon on Friday 20th September 2013. Applications received after this date will not be considered unless places are still available. The allocation of places will be confirmed by e-mail on Monday 23rd September 2013.
